The Statistical Analysis of Biomedical and Educational Research (SABER) unit is the data coordinating center for several multi-center clinical trials and observational studies. We are a research center located within the Biostatistics Department at the School of Public Health (SPH) on Michigan's central campus. We are looking for an experienced and dynamic staff member with a commitment to contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all members of our community. The research administrator senior will perform a wide range of professional financial and research administration duties. The research administrator senior will report to the infrastructure manager and will work directly with faculty, sponsors and collaboratively with other

research administrator(s) at SABER.

Responsibilities*

Pre-award activities include, but not limited to:

  • Assist SABER pre-award lead in development, preparation and submission of grant and contract proposals.

  • Manage the submission for complex research grant proposals to private and federal funding agencies. This includes processing all proposal paperwork including budgets, justification, current and pending, etc., working with partners to collect relevant information and ensure submission and approval of proposals within set deadlines.

  • Serve as signature authority for electronic proposals, submit electronic proposals and assists with problems.

  • Monitor all proposals to meet agency and University guidelines, published timetables and deadlines.

  • Facilitate the preparation of indirect cost (IDC) waiver requests.

Post-award activities include, but not limited to:

  • Reconcile sponsored research projects using M-Reports, M-Pathways, eReconciliation and other reporting tools to ensure appropriate use of funds.

  • Meet regularly with SABER financial team to review award contracts, consult with financial and administrative management of projects, and offer analysis, guidance on best practices relating to post award management.

  • Set up new awards including subaward requests, subcontracts, unfunded agreements, and hardship requests.

  • Review, encumber, and monitor financial transactions for appropriateness and allowability.

  • Manage effort across portfolio of awards for 50+ research staff and PI.

  • Supervise the processing of invoices and monitoring of budgets.

  • Ensure compliance with sponsor terms, University policies/procedures and federal regulations.

  • Research, analyze, and resolve sponsored project issues.

  • Prepare financial status reports and sponsor reports as needed.

  • Compile financial information to process transactions (i.e., budget allocations, appointment changes and journal entries).

  • Review and approve travel and expense reports.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree, and 5-7 years experience (for Senior level) OR 3-5 years experience (for Intermediate level) supporting clinical research administration.

  • Ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of responsibilities.

  • Experience with pre- and post-award processes.

  • Experience with government (NIH) grant proposals.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and to professionally represent the group to both internal and external staff.

  • Proven excellent organizational skills, with ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, with continued attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of UM financial practices, policies, procedures, and regulations, especially regarding procurement, sponsored programs, contract administration, travel/expense reporting, p-card usage, sponsored billing.

  • Familiarity and experience with University of Michigan administrative and business tools such as Business Objects, MReports and other MPathways systems, and Concur.

Work Locations

This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Salary range for Senior level: $72,373 - $89,402

Salary range for Intermediate level: $59,670 - $73,710

This position offers a $1,500 signing bonus.
