VMware Senior Open Source Community Manager - Cloud Native (Opportunity for Remote Work) in Houston, Texas

The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

The Community Engagement team at VMware is seeking a Community Manager for Open Source projects to join our Community Engagement initiatives to drive adoption of the open source components of Tanzu solutions. As a community manager, you will utilize your strong understanding of the cloud native landscape to help shape the community engagement for Carvel and other Tanzu-related open source projects. You will be responsible for building and managing relationships with users, contributors, and partners.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

In this role, you will be responsible for but not limited to the planning, execution and management of the open source community engagement strategy and associated programs surrounding the Carvel and Tanzu-related open source projects. As an active member of the community, you will be an integral part in amplifying VMware’s commitment to open source.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?

Success in this role will mean that you are building community and awareness through public channels of influence including community meetings, written articles, and contributions to open source projects. You are executing against plans built from the community engagement guidelines with product management, and completed community health assessments. Open source project teams are engaged with the community of users, contributors, and partners. Integrated engagement with downstream Tanzu products are benefiting the community and VMware’s user base.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?

We expect you to:

  • Responsible for the overall development of the community engagement for Carvel and Tanzu-related open source projects

  • Support internal teams to be better open source citizens, based on both internal and public community guidelines.

  • Contribute to project health assessments and recommendations on next steps.

  • Reach out to community members and users, gathering feedback to the open source project teams and product managers on how to improve engagement.

  • Provide feedback based on open source learnings to product management and engineering to improve Tanzu solutions’ user experience, and highlight new areas of need.

  • Formulate leadership level messaging and communications.

  • Maintain knowledge of platforms, architectures, and the cloud native landscape and how the projects relate to each other.

  • Ability to travel up to 20% of each year depending on where meetings/conferences take place.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Amanda Katona, Community Engagement Director in the modern applications business unit’s engineering team. Amanda joined VMware in 2018 after leading open source marketing for The {code} Team representing open source efforts at Dell Technology and Dell EMC. Amanda is passionate about building diverse and inclusive communities. If she’s not working, she’s traveling the world looking for the perfect path less traveled with her daughter.

The Community Engagement team is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds who are excited about enabling open source project teams to be successful and influential in their respective communities. This is an expanding, highly collaborative team that strives to bring authenticity and compassion to our work.
