MITRE’s Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization (CGEM), Veterans Affairs Health, Innovation, and Central Office (HICO) division is seeking motivated and creative individuals with a desire to learn VA health administration, operations, and data analytics for a Summer 2023 Health Analyst Internship. This position has opportunities to work on multiple projects, cross-pollinate good ideas across the government, and develop technical analyses and recommendations.

HICO is an interdisciplinary department that thrives on having adaptable and diverse skillsets to support comprehensive analysis and to drive analytical, evidence-based decision making with our sponsors. Our department works to solve problems around the care and services provided to our nation's Veterans in partnership with the government. We also actively conduct independent research in areas of interest to our government partners, including clinical and systems engineering analyses.

Responsibilities

  • Applying a variety of analytical techniques to tackle customer challenges, including data mining, statistical models, predictive analytics, optimization, risk analysis, and data visualization.

  • Applying health IT and/or health policy with the goal of improving access to health data, advancing interoperability, or developing health standards.

  • Applying data analytics to real world problems and having an innate curiosity and interest in developing research questions and testing hypotheses.

  • Applying statistical analytics and health informatics with the goal of improving access to and security of health data and patient generated data, analyzing and interpreting of patient data, advancing interoperability, or developing health standards for better public health outcomes.

  • Providing documentation or specification analysis, information preparation, project management support (status reports, spreadsheets, etc.), deliverable preparation (documents and presentations), deliverable editing, or performing health IT research.

  • Address social and organizational influences and structure within the healthcare delivery context.

  • Conduct research and analysis using applied social and behavioral science techniques and models.

  • Coordinate and conduct activities related to long- and short-range planning; program and project development, implementation, and evaluation; and translation and dissemination of scientific information to audiences in a variety of formats.

  • Support stakeholder analyses, organizational assessments, development, and design supporting health related organizations.

Requirements:

  • Must be presently enrolled and in good standing with a graduate or undergraduate degree program with a focus on public health, clinical/health informatics, healthcare standards and interoperability, health data science/analytics, health policy, human factors engineering, and/or pursing a clinical degree with course work in informatics, policy, or acquisitions. Should be enrolled the next semester full-time.

  • Familiarity with healthcare, public health, and scientific terminology.

  • Demonstrated understanding of clinical informatics systems or clinical data.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the healthcare industry, clinical roles, and government or private healthcare organizations.

  • Sustained excellence in academic performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with health IT standards – such as terminology standards (e.g., ICD-10-CM/PCS) or exchange standards – especially HL7 FHIR.

  • Experience in clinical data workflow modeling.

  • Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, etc.), EHR implementations, and EHR workflows.

  • Subject matter expertise in health economics, health or public policy, outcomes research, health analytics, public health, health information technology, and/or other health-related government initiatives.

  • Familiarity with behavioral science research methods including survey, experimental, qualitative, and quantitative methods

  • Experience with various Microsoft Office 365 Applications, including: Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, Planner, Power BI, SharePoint, Teams, and Forms.
